Dear Parents,

I am writing this newsletter to let you know what your daughter has done in math this session of SMART.

I am team teaching with Sarah Myers.  We have really enjoyed the learning experience of teaching your daughter.

We hope you find this newsletter very informative and like what we have done to make your daughter’s after-school time fun.

Thanks!

Valentine Candy Count

SMART began during the week of Valentine’s day.  Your daughter estimated, sorted, classified, and counted Valentine candy hearts.  Each student was asked to guess how many candy hearts there were in all and which color heart was in the container the most and least and we made a prediction chart.  Miss Myers and I divided the candy into cups and the students worked in pairs to sort and classify them. After every pair was finished tallying the candy on their classifying sheets, we worked as a group to put all of our information onto a final results graph.  After we finished the graph, we studied the results.  We found that there was a total of 399 candy hearts.  The color with the most amount was purple and the least was yellow.  The students asked each other questions about the results and were very engaged in this activity.  Overall, they learned a lot!

Number Hunt

After reading the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, the class went on a “number hunt” around the building.  We split into two groups.  Each group carried a flashlight and each student carried their own clipboard to write down the numbers they found. When each group finished, we met in our classroom.  Each student had a chance to discuss what she wrote down.  I think everyone had a great time.  Ask your daughter what she learned!

It’s About Time!

For the past few weeks, the class has been learning about time.  The students made their own clocks using paper plates.  We read The Ding Dong Clock by Carol H. Behrman.  The students used the clocks they made to show the time in the story.

The students played Time Bingo where each student has to listen to different times.  They then have to look on their Bingo sheet to find the correct time.  The students that had a Bingo were given candy.

(This is a group picture of the girls playing Time Bingo quietly!)

Another part of time is learning about calendars.  We made our very own calendars for the year 2001.  We cut and pasted pictures taken of our class from the digital camera to put on our calendars.  We drew pictures on the months that didn’t have our class pictures.  Then, we answered questions using our calendars.  For example, What month is your birthday on? What day of the week is your birthday on this year?
